How to update your message, program scrolling text and adjust nighttime brightness.
You have something new to say on your LED sign. Maybe your hours have changed, you’re promoting an event or you want to replace a message that’s been running too long. Where do you start?
Your sign’s software is where you manage those everyday changes. Depending on your system, you may use one tool to create the message and another to schedule it or adjust the display’s settings. The exact steps vary, but understanding these three common tasks makes managing your sign much easier.
How do I change the text on an LED sign?
You change the text through the software used to create and send content to your sign. Usually, that means opening an existing message or template, editing the wording, previewing it and publishing the update.
Let’s say your sign promotes a Saturday event. You want to change the starting time from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. If the message contains editable text, you can open the design and replace the time. If the words are part of an uploaded image or finished video, you’ll need to edit the original artwork or create a replacement.
Before sending the update, check more than the spelling. Is the lettering large enough? Does the message fit comfortably? Can someone understand it without reading several lines of small text?
Then check the schedule. Saving a design does not always mean it’s already playing on your sign. You may still need to add it to a playlist, select the correct display and publish it.
NEXT’s cloud-based sign software lets you update messages and schedule content remotely. You can plan announcements ahead of time instead of remembering to change the sign on the morning of an event.

How do you program a scrolling LED sign?
If your software supports scrolling text, you enter your message, choose a scrolling effect and adjust its direction and speed before publishing it. “Programming” in this context generally means choosing settings in an editor—you don’t need to write computer code.
The controls may be called scrolling, animation or text effects. Some systems create movement within the content editor; others display an animation or video you’ve prepared separately. Your software determines which approach is available.
Start with a short message and preview the entire sequence. If the words move too quickly, people may miss them. If they move too slowly, viewers may leave before they reach the important part.
It’s also worth asking whether the message needs to scroll. A driver approaching your business may have only a brief opportunity to read your sign. A complete message such as “FALL PLANT SALE — SATURDAY” can be easier to understand when it appears together.
Scrolling should serve the message. It shouldn’t become a way to squeeze an entire paragraph onto the display. For a longer announcement, consider simplifying the wording or using separate messages that each make sense on their own.
How do you dim an LED sign at night?
Nighttime dimming is handled through the display’s brightness controls. Depending on your equipment, you may adjust brightness manually, set a schedule or use automatic adjustment with a light sensor.
A schedule changes brightness at specified times. Automatic sensor-based control responds to the surrounding light, using configured settings to determine the display’s brightness. These are separate approaches; for example, NovaStar’s control documentation specifies that automatic brightness adjustment requires a light sensor.
Your brightness settings may be in a different area from the tools you use to edit messages. If you can change the wording but cannot find a dimming control, ask your sign provider where that setting is managed and whether your account has access.
There isn’t one nighttime percentage that works for every sign. Your provider should help configure the display for its surroundings and applicable local requirements. If you use a fixed schedule, review it as sunset times change throughout the year.
Changing your artwork to a darker background can affect how the message looks, but it does not replace properly configuring the display’s brightness controls.
Get comfortable with the controls you use most
You don’t need to learn every feature at once. Start by practicing how to edit a message, schedule it and confirm that it appears correctly on the sign.
