LEDs (light emitting diodes), have increased in popularity due to their efficiency, eco-friendliness, low cost, and lifespan longevity. They are primarily used in commercial digital signs and scoreboards. Among the various types of LEDs, SMD (Surface Mounted Devices) and DIP (Dual Inline Package) LEDs are the two most common in digital signage. While they share some similarities in functionality, they offer different advantages.
SMD (Surface Mounted Devices) LEDs
SMD LEDs, like the ones used for our STAX product, are mounted on printed circuit boards (PCBs) using Surface Mounted Technology. These LEDs are compact and feature three colors (red, green, and blue) combined into a single point, either black or white. With its small size, SMD LEDs are able to have a much closer pitch, resulting in a much higher resolution LED module compared to DIP LEDs. They are ideal for high-resolution LED signage, offering exceptional image quality for close-up viewing. Additionally, SMD LEDs are cost-effective, making them a popular choice for digital displays requiring captivating full-color displays.
DIP (Dual Inline Package) LEDs
DIP LEDs are the traditional type, easily recognizable by their “pill” shape and the long contacts extending from the bottom. In DIP LEDs, the three colors (RGB) are separated and clearly visible, with some designs incorporating a fourth white LED. These LEDs can be either soldered or inserted directly into PCBs. Known for their durability, high brightness, and limited visibility, DIP LEDs are particularly suited for outdoor digital signage. They can achieve the ultra-high brightness necessary for outdoor use.
Key Differences
In summary, SMD LEDs are newer, more refined, and enhanced. Offering smaller size, brighter colors, and a far better resolution than the traditional DIP LEDs. They are the more popular choice for digital displays due to their superior capabilities and longevity. On the other hand, DIP LEDs are a reliable and cost-effective option for outdoor digital signage, providing the necessary brightness.

There is no right or wrong answer when choosing which type of LED is best for your digital sign. The choice depends on your specific needs and the intended use of the signage. Regardless of the type you choose, LEDs are a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for your business.
