Getting the Most Out of Your LED Sign

Troubleshooting Common Display Issues

Your LED sign is running, but something doesn’t look right. Maybe one section has gone dark, a message is flickering, or a line is cutting through the image.

Where do you start?

Before changing settings, take a moment to watch what the sign is doing. A few simple observations can help you explain the problem and get the right help faster. You don’t need to open the cabinet or know how the electronics work.

First, Is It the Sign or the Content?

Watch a complete rotation of your messages. Does the problem show up on every message, or just one image or video?

If you can, try displaying a simple image that has worked correctly before. Then compare what’s on the sign with the preview in your software.

If the same problem appears in the preview, start by checking the content. If the preview looks correct but part of the sign still looks wrong, that’s useful information for your support team.

Think about when you first noticed it, too. Was it after uploading a new video? Did the power go out? Has the problem been coming and going? You don’t need to diagnose it yourself—just describe what changed.

Why Is Half of My LED Sign Black?

A dark section can mean that part of the display isn’t receiving power or data, or that a module needs attention. It doesn’t automatically mean you need a new sign.

Your display is made up of smaller sections called modules. A problem affecting one module or a shared connection can leave part of the image dark while the rest keeps working.

Look at the shape of the dark area. Is it a small square, a row, or half the screen? Does it stay in the same place as the messages change?

Take a photo of the whole sign from a safe location. That wider view helps support see exactly where the working image stops.

Want to understand what might be happening behind the screen? Our white paper, Why Is Half My LED Sign Black?, explains the possibilities.

Why Is My LED Sign Flickering?

Flickering can come from a power, data, or module problem. The pattern helps your support team narrow it down.

Is the whole sign flashing at once, or just one section? Does it happen throughout the playlist, or only when a certain video plays?

Also, check whether you see the flicker when looking directly at the sign or only when recording it on your phone. Tell support which one you’re seeing.

A short video can be helpful, especially if the problem comes and goes. Include a note about when it happens and how long it lasts.

Resist the temptation to keep changing settings to see what works. A clear description of the original problem is often more useful than a list of adjustments you can’t quite remember. Technical background on power-related flickering

Why Are There Lines Through My Display?

A line that stays in the same place across different messages may point to a display or signal problem. A line that appears in just one image may be part of the content.

Start with the preview in your software. Can you see the line there? If so, check the original image or video.

If the preview looks fine, try another message. Notice whether the line stays in place, changes color, or disappears.

When you contact support, describe what you see: “There’s a dark vertical line on the left side” is much more useful than “the picture looks strange.” A photo helps, too. Some module faults can produce a blank column, but the appearance alone doesn’t establish the cause. Technical example

What Should I Have Ready When I Call for Help?

You don’t need a technical diagnosis. Start with:

  • The sign’s location and model or serial number, if you have it.
  • A photo or short video of the problem.
  • When it started and whether it happens on every message.
  • Any recent content changes, power interruptions, or service work.

Leave opening the cabinet and checking internal components to qualified service personnel. Before restarting the sign, follow the manufacturer’s instructions or ask support to walk you through it.
